The Pelican Brig, beating the French Frigate Medea, into Guadaloupe, after an Action of 2 hours
A view of the two-hour engagement between the British ‘Pelican’ brig and the French frigate ‘Medea’. The action took place on 25 September 1796. The ‘Medea’ is shown in the centre of the picture in port broadside view. The ‘Pelican’ in port bow view is seen at the right. Both ships identified with inscriptions below their respective positions. Additionally, both have had their sails shot through. Aquatint designed and engraved by William Elmes. Uncoloured impression. There is also a coloured impression in the collection (PAD5507).
