The naval dockyard in Downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The naval dockyard in Downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The photographer is looking east-by-north from an elevated position, probably the roof of a building, showing the workshops, sheds and administrative buildings of the base. In the foreground, seen from off her starboard side, is the incomplete river monitor Paraguassu (1938) which was launched 28 December 1938. Beyond her are two naval tugs. Alongside the outer corner berth is the scout cruiser Rio Grande Do Sul (1909) with her sister Bahia (1909) outboard of her and offshore is the naval tug Annibal Mendonca (1919). The two funnel and foremast of the battleship Sao Paulo (1909) can be seen projecting above the pitched roofs of workshops and further along the jetty is the foremast and funnel of the battleship Minas Geraes (1909). Merchant shipping is in Guanabara Bay.
