The steam hammer in No. 3 Smithery, Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire

The steam hammer at work in No. 3 Smithery of Portsmouth Dockyard. Four men in long aprons are holding the hot billet in place while the hammer fashions it into shape. On the right and behind the hammer are two 40 ton cranes manufactured by The Hydraulic Engineering Co of Chester in about 1880.
