The interior of the welding centre in No. 1 Ship Shop in Portsmouth Dockyard. A group of students are seated in the classroom being instructed in "Double Vee and nosing" by the teacher. On the wall are panels showing different types of joints and welds, the crystallisation of metals and equilibrium diagrams and cooling curves. On the table in the foreground is a range of detailed constructional plans. The students are all wearing boiler suits, many of them with 216 stensilled on the back.
