On the hangar deck of the aircraft carrier Ilustrious (1939) in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire.
Looking across one end of the hangar deck of the aircraft carrier Illustrious (1939) in Portsmouth Dockyard, from deck level showing an enclosure consisting of a serving counter, behind which are plate racks and hot food cabinets marked Anson. On the left a network of scaffolding with long wooden tables and benches has been installed to enable the ship to carry 2000 men of the Home Fleet out to Malta to replace a like number of men of the Mediterranean Fleet who were due for release. Each bay of the scaffolding is numbered and groups of bays have been assigned names. The ship sailed from Portsmouth 20 Nov. 1947 for Malta and arrived back with the return drafts on 11 Dec. 1947.
