'Horse starting' after Sawrey Gilpin. Gilpin was one of the most respected animal painters of his day, second only to his rival George Stubbs. This print shows a horse on rocky terrain being startled (or starting) at the sight of a snake on the ground. The engravers and publishers of this print are father and daughter team, William and Letitia Byrne. Quite a number of their engravings are found in the Herschel collection suggested the family liked their work.

It is possible that this print was chosen for inclusion into the Herschel family's prints and drawings collection because of Gilpin's reputation as an animal painter. It may be that it was intended to serve as part of the Herschels' children's art education.
