Medal Commemorating the Abolition of the slave trade
The obverse of the medal depicts a bust of William Wilberforce, facing right, with the legend: 'WILLIAM WILBERFORCE M.P., THE FRIEND OF AFRICA'. The reverse shows Britannia, seated upon a dais, attended by figures representing medicine, trade and knowledge, with Faith hovering above. On a tablet below is the inscription: 'I HAVE HEARD THEIR CRY'. It has the exergue: 'SLAVE TRADE ABOLISHED MDCCCVII'.
