Dead-eye

The metal bracket around this example shows it is a 'standing dead-eye'. It would either have been bolted to the channels (chain-wales) of an iron or steel vessel, or to one of the 'top's further up a mast assembly. The mast-shroud to which it would have been connected by adjustable lashings through the eyes would have just had the matching one above eye-spliced into the lower end. [PvdM 10/17]
