Assegai

Short spear or assegai. With a small iron head, the long tang is attached to the wooden shaft by plaited wire lashing. The shaft has a protuberance near the butt and is surrounded by two bands of plaited wire (a third is missing). The spears of the Ndbele and Shona peoples had metal binding round the tang and butt of the weapon. This item however, does not have the metal blade at the butt end characteristic of their spears.
