Medal commemorating the Battle of Cartagena, 1643. Obverse: Youthful bust of King Louis XIV with long hair in armour and cloak (right). Legend: 'LUDOVICUS . XIIII . REX . CHRISTIANISS' (Louis XIV, most Christian king of France and Navarre). Reverse: Trident within a crown decorated with palm and laurel rising out of the sea, Cartagena (right) and fleet (left) bombarding it. Legend: 'OMEN IMPERII MARITIMI'. (An augury of a maritime empire). Exergue: 'HISPANIS . SVO . IN . MARI . VICTIS . AD . KARTAG . NOVAM M. DCXLIII'. (The Spanish defeated at New Carthage, 1643.)
