Grace Darling
A carved wood, ivory and alabaster figure of Grace Darling. The heroine sits on an alabaster rock looking out to sea with her left hand raised to her eyes, and her right resting on a lifebelt inscribed 'Grace Darling.' The well-modelled head, arms and bare feet are of ivory, her costume and the carved lifebelt are finely carved in wood, and the figure rests on a fruitwood base. It is the combination of alabaster with wood and ivory that led Sotheby's to catalogue the figure as probably Belgian.
