Manchester halfpenny token
Manchester halfpenny token. Obverse: A man carrying a bale on his back. Legend: 'MANCHESTER HALFPENNY'. Exergue: '1793'. Reverse: The arms, crest and motto of the Duke of Bridgewater a rose below. Legend: 'SUCCESS TO NAVIGATION'. Inscription on edge: 'PAYABLE AT I. FIELDING, MANCHESTER'. Used to pay the workmen during the building of the Bridgewater canal from Worsley to Manchester. This was intended to carry coal from the Duke's mines.
