Signalling telescope
This is a bridge telescope. It is made of a tapered, leather-covered brass barrel with two leather protecting caps. It has two brass draw tubes and is focused using the second screw.
'ANT: EX: 1901' is inscribed both on the leather covering and on the mount for a stand. This indicates that the telescope was probably used on board the 'Discovery' during the Antarctic Expedition of 1901–04 when Scott reached L82 16' 33", the farthest point yet touched. It was not used on sledge journeys as it was too heavy, but it would likely to have been used as a look out telescope at ‘Discovery's’ winter quarters.
