Jug

An earthenware jug, transfer-printed in black with red and yellow check decoration around the neck. The transfers are partly hand-coloured. On one side is a circular portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) after Daniel Orme, with ships in the background and trophies below, inscribed above 'ADMIRAL NELSON/ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY' below 'VICTORY.' On the other side, a woman in classical dress with two young children all dressed in yellow, one playing with a lamb. 'Behold the Widow casting herself and Orphans on benevolent Britons.' Below the lip a verse within a laurel wreath: 'A Hero great he was/His Country's praise & pride/Most gloriously he fought/And for his Country died.'
