Atlas sheet from an edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum with Latin text, published in 1573. Hand coloured copperplate engraving. This map of Flanders is drawn in an oval frame with north at 22 degrees. Scale 1:400,000. The bar scale is in small, medium and large Flanders miles. There is a key to the symbols for settlements at the left of the map. Ortelius based this map on Gerard Mercator's 1540 map of Flanders. Beacon towers are shown along the coastline.The land area is decorated by a seated female figure holding a branch. The sea area is decorated with ships firing their guns and a sea creature.
