Plaque

Brass plaque on a shield-shaped wooden base commemorating the battle of the River Plate. A naval crown above a scroll inscribed: ’13 DECEMBER 1939 / SOUTH ATLANTIC SQUADRON’. Below, an white ensign in coloured enamel within a lifebelt in relief flanked by anchors and laurel branches. On the lower part of the plaque is a circular scroll inscribed: ‘HMS AJAX, HMS EXETER, HMS ACHILLES.’ In the centre of this: ‘Commemorating / DESTRUCTION / of / GRAF SPEE.’
