Sheffield Plate tray

Tray owned by Vice-Admiral Nelson's daughter Horatia Nelson (1801-81).

Plain oval Sheffield plate tray with a gadrooned rim, standing on four feet. The centre is engraved with two putti holding a ribbon inscribed 'HORATIA 29th Octr 1807'. The ribbon encloses the sash of the Order of the Bath, inscribed 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO' and with the medal of the Order hanging below. Within this is engraved the Hamilton crest of a saw cutting through a tree arising from a duke's coronet.

29 October was the date given by Lady Hamilton as Horatia's birthday, although it was actually circa 29 January 1801.
