Non-regulation stock

Stock, reputedly worn by Nelson (1758-1805) at the Battle of Trafalgar. This black velvet stock is lined with white linen. At one end is a gilt metal buckle with four prongs secured to the stock by means of four corresponding button holes. The stock passed around the front of the neck and fastened in the back by means of this buckle. This stock is an example of the type of non-regulation garment worn with uniform.
