Free teacher training at the Royal Observatory

We offer FREE training for teachers and also trainee teachers. This programme has been developed in collaboration with our Royal Observatory Greenwich Teacher Forum which is made up of teachers, trainee teachers and teacher trainers.

What do we offer?

Both the initial teacher training (ITT) and continuing professional development (CPD) sessions are made up of the following elements:

  • Gallery tours – including the astronomy centre and historic north site.
  • A planetarium show - we will endeavour to book you into an age appropriate show whenever possible but this depends on when you are able to visit.
  • A workshop – this is led by one of our astronomers and offers opportunities to further your knowledge, gather practical science ideas to use back at school and ask any astronomy questions.

Special Project Alert - We are currently working with the brilliant team at STEM Learning LTd. and ESERO UK on a collaborative project to help provide more training for teachers and trainee teachers when it comes to teaching space in the classroom.  This project will only run this academic year and as with all our CPD and ITT sessions these are free too. The sessions are a little different to our usual offer because you will not only get a planetarium show, workshop, gallery tours and Royal Observatory Greenwich resources but you will also receive lots of extra resources from ESERO UK for free too.  For more informaion please contact or if you have already booked a session and now need to sign up to the project please click here

What is the difference between the CPD and ITT training session?

Both programmes have a strong focus on furthering knowledge as well as providing practical science ideas and resources that can be used back in the classroom. The ITT session also includes a series of activities designed to boost confidence in teaching space science whereas the CPD session includes more activities that encourage and facilitate the sharing of best practice amongst teachers instead.

How long are the sessions?

We recommend you allocate at least 3 hours for your visit to enable you to fit in all of the above components. Your visit will be scheduled to suit your group by a member of the science learning team at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and your group leader will then be responsible for disseminating any visit details with your group.

How can I book a session?

If you would like to book a group session please contact Liz Avery on for more details. Remember we are often able to accommodate bookings on school training days too so there are lots of options.

If you have previously taken part in our ITT training programme we would encourage you to follow this up with your school when you become fully qualified too. The CPD session will build on previous knowledge you gained through the ITT training programme but it can also act as a stand-alone session for those that have never visited before.

I am not part of a group, can I still book a training place?

We do not take individual bookings for CPD sessions unfortunately so would encourage you to look within your school for other members of staff that would also like to come along. If you are unable to make a full group up please contact us about joining our Teacher Forum where we can also offer you support.
