This session is designed to support any teacher currently teaching or considering teaching Transatlantic Enslavement at both Primary and Secondary levels.
Based on training delivered in the Museum and on the knowledge we have developed reviewing our own galleries and programmes, this session aims to build confidence and knowledge in teaching this vital topic. In this session we will:
- Look at how we ensure the voices and experiences of enslaved people are included in teaching this history
- Think about how using museum collections and objects can support learning
- Develop our anti-racist teaching practice
- Consider how to support learners with their emotional responses
You will come away with suggested resources and reading lists to support your work and the opportunity to talk about this with fellow educators.

Remiiya Badru
Remiiya Badru is a former Caird Research fellow at Royal Museums Greenwich and currently delivers the schools study sessions on Migration and Transatlantic Enslavement for KS3&4. Remiiya is also a multi-interdisciplinary Artist, Walker, Creative Learning Practitioner and Consultant, who channels her artistic practice through drawing, designing, writing and making.
She also curated a one-woman show titled ‘Rhumblines’, which was embodied as a ‘living map’ installation around her research on black and indigenous women at sea, also inspired by her connection to the River Thames. She was also commissioned to present a lecture titled ‘Timehri travels: A journey to emancipation’ as part of the Queen’s House Art Salon series.

Stella Dadzie
Stella Dadzie is a well-known writer, educator and feminist historian. She was a Commissioner on the Mayor of London's African and Asian Heritage Commission in 2004, and has worked with the National Maritime Museum since 2020, supporting efforts to diversify representation in displays, develop visitor resources, train staff and raise the profile of enslaved women. From 2023, she chaired the Atlantic Worlds Gallery Advisory Board. Her books include The Heart of the Race, Black Women's Lives in Britain (Virago, 1985; Verso 2018) and A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery & Resistance (Verso 2020).
