Letter written by John and Phoebe Diggle to their son John Diggle on board HMS TERROR.

Letter written by John and Phoebe Diggle to their son John Diggle, ship's cook on board HMS TERROR.

The letter went with one of the expeditions that was sent in search of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition and was returned to Diggle's parents. The envelope has stamped over the handwritten text ‘returned to the sender, there having been no means of forwarding it.’ John Diggle was Cook on HMS TERROR (See the muster book- ADM 38/1962, dated 3 March to 30 June 1845).

The word ‘safe’ is written three times on the single page letter and two of these next to the word ‘return.’ It is almost written as a prayer intending to bring good fortune.
