The WENTWORTH anchors near Caberrero island, where both their ship's boats are lost in a storm. She is measured by the Emperor's Chief Custom Officer to assess the duty chargeable. The ship is also visited by the Hoppowe, or Mandarin, whom Barlow describes. He is accompanied by attendants, some playing on pipes, while others beat and fine anybody who gets in their way on the streets. The Chinese prefer to be paid in silver rather than gold. Barlow describes the character of the Chinese people, and the different goods they trade in.
