The hoppow requires a bribe before he allows the factors to trade. Barlow feuds with the captain and threatens to leave the ship. He itemises the cargo for the return trip.
The hoppow boards the ship to measure it, and requires a bribe before he allows the factors to trade. Barlow describes the extortionate demands of the Chinese customs and says that the Emperor's officials just want to make money for themselves. The captain cheats him out of some money and the crewmen out of their beer, and Barlow threatens to leave the ship. He itemises the cargo taken on board for the return journey.
