Administrative / biographical background
George Scott was born in 1783 and entered the Navy on 9 June 1798 as a midshipman on board HMS PERSEUS. Between August 1804 and April 1805 he served as midshipman and master's mate on board HMS VICTORY in the Mediterranean and was made lieutenant by Lord Nelson, his promotion being confirmed on 12 September 1805. On 20 February 1806 Scott was appointed as first lieutenant to the PHEOBE and participated in the action off Madagascar during which the French frigate LA RENOMMEE was captured and subsequently renamed HMS JAVA. Scott was promoted to the rank of commander on 24 March 1812 but the war ended before he had made post rank. Scott later petitioned the Admiralty and was made captain on 17 February 1830. After retirement he was appointed to the rank of vice-admiral in 1862, rear-admiral in 1855 and admiral in 1866. He died in the following year at Wooden House, Kelso, Roxburghshire. His service record is available at The National Archives (catalogue reference ADM 196/6, image reference 280-283).
