Administrative / biographical background
Keats entered the Navy in 1770 and served throughout the war of Independence and the Napoleonic conflict, narrowly missed Trafalgar when sent back to Portsmouth to refit by Nelson. He was however Duckworth’s flag captain at San Domingo, and escorted the Danish fleet to England in 1807, as well as commanding in the Baltic fleet before ending the war as Governor of Newfoundland 1813 and going on to become Governor of Greenwich Hospital 1821. Keats was however best known for events of July 1801 when as captain of the SUPERB, he (in bad weather and darkness) chased, caught and destroyed 2 Spanish; a 1st rate and a 74 gun; in the entrance to the Mediterranean. One of Nelson’s confidants, to whom he explained his tactics just before Trafalgar, Keats also famously spent only a single night ashore between March 1801 and August 1805.
