Letterbook of Captain William Selby, 1797-1799

Letterbook containing copies of letters sent and received by Captain William Selby, Bombay Marine, East India Company, between Mar 1797 and Aug 1799. The pages are numbered 101-149. Between Jan 1797 and Jul 1797, Selby was in command of the frigate BOMBAY (1793) in the East Indies. He took the surrender of the Dutch garrisons at Manado and Gorontalo on the island of Celebes [Saluwesi], in operations carried out with Captain Edward Pakenham of HMS RESISTANCE (1782). In Aug 1797 he embarked as a passenger on the INTREPID (1780) at Amboyna [Ambon, Maluku Islands] to return to India. The last letter in the volume was written from Perim in the Gulf of Aden in Aug 1799.
