Wilfred Lowndes was born in a small village in the Pennines, Yorkshire, in 1921. His father worked in the woollen industry as a ‘foreman teaser’ and he grew up in a very poor farming community. He joined the Royal Navy in 1941 and the interview covers his training and experiences in the Second World War where he went to sea on DEMS (Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships) where he served as a naval rating among merchant seafarers. He seems to have taken part in the Atlantic Convoys and also on voyages to South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. He ended the war as base staff in Panama. He meditates on the impact of the war on the men at sea, how they staved off fear and what it was like to find himself there after growing up in such a small country village.
