Robert Douglas was born around 1891 and appears to have grown up in Montrose, Scotland. Douglas discusses his home and life growing up and how his father arranged for him to start an engineering apprenticeship with a textile firm. Realising that he wanted to see the world, Douglas decided to go to sea, initially working as a marine engineer in Liverpool and then joining the City of Cambridge, an Ellerman Line ship. His interview covers his work and life at sea – he ultimately became a chief engineer.
