Foolscap notebook 'Private Log and Diary', kept on the PASHA, 1945-1946
Private diaries: Handwritten diary kept by Thompson while master of the PASHA (1919), between August 1945 and August 1946.
August 1945 to September 1945 records the entry of the PASHA into Singapore, carrying Red Cross relief items, as part of the first convoy into the port after the Japanese surrender. An enclosed newspaper cutting records his meeting a fellow South Shields resident in Changi prison camp.
April 1946 to May 1946 covers a voyage from Calcutta to Mormugao and back, carrying coal, during which Thompson had a high fever (probably malaria).
June 1946 covers a voyage from Calcutta to Madras and back, carrying coal.
June 1946 to August 1946 covers a voyage from Calcutta to Chittagong and Tuticorin, carrying rice and paddy between the latter two ports, with difficulties due to the monsoon floods.
