Arthur Etheridge was born in Stokesby, East Norfolk in 1895. This interview covers his career at sea which includes time as a deckhand on fishing trawlers in the herring fishery, serving in merchant ships during the First World War and after (seemingly as an able seaman, normally on short voyages), working on dredgers in the River Tyne and finally as a superintendent on the River Tyne. The interview covers a vast array of material including life in Norfolk at the turn of the century, his experiences of the First World War, life and work at sea in different kinds of ships including relationships, fights and food, and a nice story about how he would make desserts for his crewmates using a recipe book he took to sea with him.
