Description of a nautical hourglass, the CLEPSAMIDIUM NAUTICUM, in John Evelyn's handwriting, without signature or date, endorsed by Samuel Pepys.
The description was copied out by John Evelyn from the JOURNAL DES SCAVANTS. The document links the two greatest diarists in the English language: Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn. Included are descriptions of the construction of the device and of the method of using it. There is also in the right-hand margin a diagram (9cm in length) of the instrument. The document is unsigned but on the verso is a note 'Mr Evelyn's description of the new sea: hour glasse' which on comparison with other of Samuel Pepys's manuscripts shows that it is his hand.
