Wilkinson, William, Commander, 1777-1857.

The papers comprise fifty-six letters written by Wilkinson to his wife, other members of his family, and notible figures such as Admiral Yorke and John Franklin, 1807 to 1833.

Administrative / biographical background
Wilkinson was master of the MINOTAUR, 1807 to 1808, and took part in the attack on Copenhagen. After cruising in the Channel and the Atlantic between 1808 and 1810 in the CHRISTIAN VII, he was discharged because of ill-health, but was given shore appointment as Superintendent of the Wharf at the Victualling Yard, Deptford. From 1832 this post became known as Master Attendant and King's Harbour Master. Wilkinson retired in 1833 and was promoted to commander in 1846.
