Shipton, Francis Henry Eldred, Commander, 1862-1937.

This sub-collection just has one journal, kept by Shipton while he was at sea as a midshipman between 1877 and 1881.

Administrative / biographical background
Shipton was born at Halsham in Yorkshire in 1862 and entered the Navy as a cadet on HMS BRITANNIA in 1875. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1884 and briefly served on the training brig HMS MARTIN (1850) before being declared unfit and placed on the retired list. He held the rank of lieutenant-commander during the First World War. He was awarded the OBE and promoted to the rank of commander (retired) in recognition of his services as a naval transport officer at Newhaven and Littlehampton. He died at Dawlish in Devon in 1937. His service record can be found under the references ADM 196/20/336 and ADM 196/42/84 at The National Archives.
