The diary records the arrival of Shackleton on 1 June 1916, who had recently made his famous voyage in the JAMES CAIRD, while the ship was anchored and coaling at the Falkland Islands in May 1916.

On-board the AVOCA, Smith visited the Falklands and Rio, giving short descriptions of both places.
