Administrative / biographical background
Robert London was born in 1834 at Hildenborough, Kent. He worked as a cable engineer for the Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Co Ltd. He was chief of the engineer staff and second in command to Captain Halpin of the GREAT EASTERN during the laying of the British-Indian submarine telegraph in 1869-1870.
