Enoch's voyage : life on a whale ship 1851-1854

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Enoch Carter Cloud left home at the age of 19 to go to sea. Joining the shipping company B.B. Howard & Son he served on the whaling ship The Henry Kneeland which left New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1851 on a voyage which would last 32 months. The ship sailed to the Azores, around Africa, to New Zealand, the whaling grounds of the Japan Sea, a number of Pacific Islands, around South America and up to the West Indies before heading back to New Bedford. Cloud maintained the diary on a daily basis intending to record 'a true narrative of what he saw'. The entries describe details of daily life on board and numerous whale chases. The text is introduced by a descendant of Cloud.
