German naval code breakers

This work is an overview of German code-breakers during the Second World War. The author takes a chronological, narrative approach to this subject, and chooses to focus for the majority of the text upon the efforts of the German code-breakers tasked with breaking Allied naval transmissions. Showell also provides some historical background for the code-breaking units, from their formation in post-First World War Germany and early success in the Second World War, to their subsequent failures in the later years of the war. Showell focuses also on German code-breaking attempts in different theatres of war, such as the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Soviet coastline. There are a series of appendixes showcasing maps and timelines in relation to the German Radio Monitoring Stations, as well as a reading list for further reading on the subject.
