The history of the female shipwright / by Mary Lacy ; with an introduction by Margarette Lincoln.
A contemporary edition of Mary Lacy's 1773 biography recounting her life as a sailor and shipwright, after she adopted the name of William Chandler and went to sea as a man. The book recounts Lacy's early life in Kent, her time in the ship Sandwich as a servant to the ship's carpenter, and later as an apprentice shipwright, before ultimately passing her shipwright exam from the British Admiralty, becoming arguably the first British woman to do so. The book also includes descriptions of life on board ship and in the dockyards, and details the author's various romantic entanglements.
