Recounts the first two Antarctic journeys of American Admiral Richard E Byrd. In the first, in 1929, Byrd made the first successful flight over the South Pole from his base on the Ross Ice Shelf. In 1934, Byrd returned to Antarctica spending five months alone in a meteorological hut during the Antarctic winter. Suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of a leaky stove, Byrd struggled to remain alive until his rescue.
