A biography of pioneering British engineer Daniel Gooch. It provides a detailed account of Gooch's life and career, particularly focusing on his pivotal roles as Superintentant of Locomotive Engines, and later Chairman, of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway, and then as chief engineer on board the SS Great Eastern during the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1865-66. It also covers his twenty-year career as an MP. There are black and white illustrations and photographs throughout.
