The book covers his early life, the first successful crossing of the Northwest Passage and his expedition to the Antarctic on board the Fram during which his expedition became the first to reach the South Pole. Later chapters mark his transition to polar exploration using aircraft and his observations on the business of exploration and the food and equipment used on the South Pole expedition.
