Admiralty Sailing Directions : West coast of Scotland pilot

Elizabeth Carter was a clergyman's daughter and was a poet, linguist and classical scholar who lived at Deal in Kent. This book, published by the Sandwich Local History Society, aims to give a better understanding of her and her life in Deal during the eighteenth century. The author uses her cache of some 500 letters, written to two close friends between 1741 and 1787, to recreate her life and times in a rough seafaring town. There are accounts of her social and domestic activities and descriptions of the town and its environs. The book has 14 plates, mostly in colour, notes and a short bibliography.
