Anzac : the landing /Stephen Chambers.

An account of the Gallipoli campaign and, in particular, the role of the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). After the failure of the naval campaign to secure the Dardenelles in March 1915, an amphibious land campaign was launched of which the landings at Anzac Cove, just north of Gaba Tepe, were a part. This landing was the first significant military operation by ANZAC troops in the war. Plans for a swift campaign were not realised as the opposing armies became entrenched in an eight-month struggle with heavy casualties on both sides with little gain in land and an ultimate defeat for the Allies. The area captured was less than two square kilometres and this became home for the 20,000 soldiers until the eventual evacuation in December 1915. The text includes extracts from unpublished diaries and is illustrated with maps and photographs. Advice and notes are included for those intending to visit the battle site.
