A MacBrayne album / Alistair Deayton & Iain Quinn.

In 1851 G & J Burns sold their West Highland steamer services to David Hutcheson & Co with the condition that Hutcheson take on their nephew David MacBrayne as a junior partner. MacBrayne renamed the company on taking it over in 1878 and the name has continued since 1973 as part of Caledonian MacBrayne. Biographical details of James Burns, David Hutcheson and David MacBrayne are provided. This is an illustrated history of the MacBrayne fleet prior to the era of the car ferry and is told through extensive photographs and illustrations of the ships, including paddle steamers, canal steamers, screw steamers, cargo vessels, motor vessels and the smaller vessels which tendered to the larger vessels at ports without piers. Particular attention is given to the RMS Columba and Iona, Saint Columba and King George V. The book also contains reproductions of promotional material and other ephemera highlighting routes, prices and timetables. Illustrations are supported by detailed captions.
