"The subject of this poem is founded on the melancholy loss of the Earl of Abergavenny outward-bound East-Indiaman, J. Wordsworth, Esq. Commander, which struck on the Shambles, off the Island of Portland, on the 5th of February, 1805, at five o'clock p.m. and sunk in Weymouth Bay about ten o'clock the same night. About three hundred persons perished in this ill-fated ship."
