A history of the Gem Line (William Robertson (Shipowners) Ltd), founded by William Robertson in 1851. The scow Ellen was the first vessel purchased by Robertson in 1852, mainly to carry coal. Robertson expanded into sailing vessels, then steam, and was engaged in the coastal bulk trade of the British Isles. By 1900 the fleet consisted of almost forty vessels. The line was acquired by Powell Duffryn Ltd in 1970. The title includes lists of Scottish companies operating coaster fleets and the yards which built these vessels. A fleet list of sail, steam and motor vessels owned by the company is provided, organized both alphabetically and chronologically.
