Fifty years with the Prince Line, 1913-1963
Author's Note: The desire to go to sea was strong, and at the age of fifteen the Author was apprenticed to the Prince Line in 1913. His indentures duly signed, he boarded the Tuscan Prince. From that day until his retirement in 1963 the ships with the funnels painted black-red-black with the Prince of Wales feathers set in the centre, were to be his life. He rose from apprentice to be Master, he was at sea through two world wars, took ship keepers' jobs during the slump years, sailed many times around the world, and was often away from home for two years at a time. These are men who ensure safety in passage to thousands of passengers and tons of cargo every year, facing dangers and emergencies, taking the rough with the smooth with a philosopy born of the sea.
