Fyffes and the banana : musa sapientum : a centenary history 1888-1988

A history of the British banana trade from 1888 when bananas were first brought to Britain commercially. The pioneers of the trade, Alfred Jones of the Elder Dempster shipping line and Edward Wathen Fyffe formed Elders & Fyffes in 1901 which would later become the Fyffes Group. The author explores the origins of the international fruit trade, the development of the early American, Canary Island and Jamaican banana trades and the impact of cooling techniques. The book is illustrated with photographs and the text supported by statistical tables relating to the fruit trade. The appendices include the family tree of Edward Wathen Fyffe, Jamaican and Canary Island banana production and export figures, a fleet list and roll of honour for those who died or were wounded in World War Two. A bibliography is also provided.
