Astronomers at Herstmonceux: in their own words
Herstmonceux in Sussex was the home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory between 1958 and its relocation to Cambridge in 1990. Centred around a medieval castle and the unique buildings known as the 'Equatorial Group', at its height more than 200 people worked at the observatory and lived in the local community. An informal history, this book records the personal recollections of those who spent much of their working lives at Herstmonceux, with contributions by Peter Corben, Dorothy Hobden, Derek Jones, Bill Nicholson, Brian Scales, Rosemary Selmes, Roy Wallis and Dr George Wilkins. The book covers the Astronomers Royal, night observing and associated instruments, the time service, chronometer department and the nautical almanac office.
