Bringing together local and international performers, this dynamic festival celebrates the power of movement. Dive (or jive) into dance workshops and discover how the flow of the ocean connects us through craft sessions and games.

The festival takes place in Ocean Court, our redesigned space that celebrates the importance of our blue planet. Come and have a boogie on our new Ocean Map too, a giant floor map that highlights our watery world.

Dance screenings

How has the sea shaped you? Head to the Lecture Theatre for a screening of Silence Between Waves, choreographed by Richard Chappell Dance.

The work takes inspiration from the seascapes of Torbay in Devon, and the stories of the area’s residents. It is performed by Singaporean dancers and a local community cast, and explores themes including home – whether near or far away – and long-distance communication.

Screenings of the dance film take place throughout the day. A Q&A with Richard Chappell will take place at 1.15pm.

Disco

Come and make a splash on the Ocean Map at our family-friendly disco! Put on your dancing shoes – and your ocean-themed costume – and join in the wave of music washing over the National Maritime Museum.

Led by arts organisation Hackney Showroom, this event will feature games, silliness and some fin-tastic prizes!

Workshops

Drawing inspiration from our natural environment, this movement workshop offers an opportunity to unlock the power of your imagination, and connect with your mind and body through sound and breath.

It will be led by artist and cultural producer Sara Dos Santos, and is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Budding artists can make their own dance ribbons too. These drop-in creative sessions take place in the Learning Space.

Movement Migration

Kim Jones, Choreographer, is the Artistic Director of Movement Migration, a collective of dancers that portray the depths of the human experience. She is an Associate Professor of Dance at UNC Charlotte.

As part of Rhythm! she will present two works: Echoes Beneath the Surface and Vitruvian Human.

Echoes Beneath the Surface is inspired by the Ocean Map at the National Maritime Museum, as well as the ocean’s rhythms – its tides, currents and the unseen forces that shape its flow. The work will be performed by dancers Lorenzo Pagano and Laurel Dalley Smith.

Vitruvian Human focuses on the ever-shifting tides of time, and is a vibrant celebration of life and resilience. It will be performed by Maria Borrowman, Shakira Kaé, Guillaume Lemoine, Panagiotis Pavlopoulos, Laura Rivet, Sarah Sulemanji and Csilla Tyahun.

Richard Chappell Dance

Human connection, boldness and sensitivity is at the heart of Richard Chappell Dance. The company was founded by Richard Chappell, whose work takes inspiration from climate activism and social justice.

Screenings of Silence Between Waves will take place throughout the Rhythm! festival. Choreographed by Chappell, the work spotlights the seascapes of Torbay in Devon, as well as Chappell's experiences growing up in the area, and the stories of local residents.

It is performed by Singaporean dancers and a local community cast, and explores themes including home – whether near or far away – and long-distance communication. The work frames our surrounding oceans as a means for connection with the wider world, instead of separation.

Silence Between Waves was commissioned by Eyeview Festival and Torbay Culture and was funded by Arts Council England and supported by Dance in Devon and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. The work was part of the British High Commission's SG-UK Partnership for the Future Campaign.

The dancers include Faye Tan, Shaun Lim and Shaw En Chew.

Trinity Laban – Dance Students

Full Fathom Five is a piece that journeys across oceans, leaving the familiar and heading towards the unknown. Choreographed by Amanda Gough, it will be performed by the following second year students on the BA Contemporary Dance programme: Bobbi Walker, Emma Smiraglia, Lily Ruscoe, Lucia Pierlot, Scarlett Jasper-Webber, Sheldon Ridge and Marcello Berry.

Trinity Laban – Adult Group

A Landless Tide was created in response to the Spilhaus projection, a map of the world that centres the ocean (just like the Ocean Map at the National Maritime Museum).

Choreographed by Luke Birch in collaboration with the dancers, the piece explores the idea of a body of water that is borderless and without boundaries.

Trinity Laban – Boundless

To & fro is performed by members of Boundless, Trinity Laban’s over 60s dance group who are local residents of Lewisham and Greenwich.

This co-created piece journeys through sounds of the ocean, to the group’s fondness of BBC Radio 4's Shipping Forecast. The piece was devised with lead artist Stella Howard and the dancers.

Jacob Wye and Monique Jonas

Jacob Wye is a dance artist and choreographer, celebrated for his ability to blend classical technique and modern creativity. He has worked with leading organisations from the Royal Ballet and Ballet Black to Hermès and the Commonwealth Games.

A dancer, choreographer and movement director, Monique Jonas is the director of Jona Dance. The London-based organisation is centred around inclusivity, working with many creatives from across the dance industry.

As part of Rhythm!, Jacob and Monique will perform their work Common Tides. They say: "Common Tides is a meeting place between bodies in motion and the pull of the sea. A duet where shifting currents become shared ground, and two dancers drift, anchor, and resurface in each other’s orbit."

Geneviève Beth Grady

Geneviève Beth Grady is a British-Canadian dance artist. She has toured around the UK as a solo dancer, and worked for film and television.

She will perform NEWS (aka N.E.W.S or News) at Rhythm! Since the work's premiere in 2006, she has performed it in numerous spaces and theatres, each time adapting it to the place/space.

"This rendition for the National Maritime Museum includes spontaneous lyrics, shanty and protest, that reflect my personal and our collective relationship to the siren call of the waterways that both connect us and carry us away," she says.

Three Bridges Primary School

Three Bridges Primary School will showcase Blue and Green, a piece devised and performed by students in collaboration with Sarah Sulemanji.

Blue and Green is a celebration of the ocean and a reminder of its vital role in our lives. Through movement, music and imagination, the young performers take us on a journey beneath the waves and across the seas, showing us how the ocean gives life, supports ecosystems, and brings us joy and peace.

At its heart, Blue and Green is a call for unity and respect. It reminds us that by working together we can care for our oceans and ensure a healthier future for the Earth.
